What sort of images does the word solitude bring up for you?

Maybe dark, sad, lonely.

Or perhaps it was more peaceful, content and something you’re craving more of.

Although solitude can be seen as isolation and misconstrued as a bad or unwanted thing.

People have been seeking out solitude since ancient times.

Have you ever wondered why?

And have you ever thought of why you may actually avoid it?

Let’s start with why we might avoid solitude.

The number one habit that I see people choosing over the years is running away from themselves.

You're not going to allow yourself to have much quiet or solitude when you're trying to run away from yourself.

So why exactly would you want to run away from yourself?

Often because you’re trying to avoid something.

It could be feelings, your awareness of other people's feelings and you may even be aware of other things beyond words.

But there are many amazing benefits of regularly taking some time to be with yourself.

Are you ready to take back your power to choose?

We all make countless choices every day.

What to wear, what to eat and drink, and even where we will focus our thoughts and attention.

Usually, we think it's easy to choose what foods to eat or the types of clothing we will wear, but not the thoughts we think.

That somehow we are victims of our thoughts and that they just bounce around from one thing to another without our input.

This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Many of us are taught that life just happens to us.

That we are either lucky or not so lucky. We are either born into the right family in a good neighborhood or not. And If you didn’t happen to get blessed with the right family, great looks etc, you can still maybe change your life a little bit if you work really really hard.

But all of those are just beliefs and beliefs can be changed.

Let’s talk about your amazing body!

I know some of you probably thought, what the hell is she talking about?

My body isn’t amazing. It's too big here, too little there, pain in this area; all sorts of things wrong with it.

Ok, now that we got the body shaming out of the way; can you find one thing you like about your body?

Just one. It could be your eyes, you have great toes or the way your nose crinkles when you smile!  

If you found it difficult to find anything about your body you like, you’re not alone.

This world teaches us to hate our bodies, look for things wrong with it and compare it to others.

I used to think something was wrong with me because I had pores on my face but the people in the magazines did not. Until I realized they were heavily made up and photo-shopped to look that way!

We are constantly bombarded with images of bodies that are the example of what we're supposed to look like.

Pay It Forward

In last week's blog I mentioned taking a look at ways you can appreciate yourself.

So now that you've done that, and even if you haven't, let's look at ways we can spread the appreciation and gratitude to those around us.

  • Donating tangible objects,
  • our time/expertise and
  • simply sending kind thoughts towards someone

are all fantastic ways to pay it forward.

Look around your home or office.

Do you notice some things that you're done with?

Perhaps you loved them at one time but they just aren't a reflection of what you want around your space any longer.

Do you realize that even if you are done with the painting, book, clothing item, etc; that it could be exactly what someone else is dreaming of having?!

Be honest with yourself and let go of items that you never use or feel obligated to keep because someone gave it to you, or you spent a lot of money on it.

Allow someone else to truly enjoy the item instead. When you release them it opens space for things you love even...

How often do you take a moment to appreciate the things and people in your life?

Maybe your answer was never, I don’t know or there’s nothing to appreciate in my life right now.

Those answers are fine, they show you where you’re currently focused. However, continuing to think like that will only keep you stuck in more of the same.

We live In a world where we’re bombarded with messages that nothing is quite good enough and we always need more. Don’t get me wrong, having goals and dreams is fantastic and important to an expansive happy life. But, so is regularly acknowledging what is “right & good”  in your life.

It is common to hear people going on about how bad things are and that one day they will be happy.

One day?

The day when they have said goal accomplished…but that day will never come. Yea sure, you may very well reach your goal but then you’ll feel that’s no longer good enough and start focusing on...

Stay on Target

When you start the journey to having more awareness, self-love and acceptance it can be very exciting and freeing.

You start noticing you're feeling happier and lighter, and when you do have an off day they’re nowhere near as frequent or intense as before.

That is until you're stuck in a room full of your relatives or in-laws LOL!

We often think once we move away from family or even have our own, many things that used to bother us just simply go away.

We have our lives pretty much together; we have careers, academic accomplishments, our children, why the heck should it matter what our Uncle "Bart" thinks of us?

Well, it technically doesn't, but that doesn't stop Bart or other family members' opinions or comments from triggering the crap out of us!

So, what to do?

Well, first remember that it is entirely normal for things that people say to bother us from time to time, second take a breath and do your best to let it go and not feed into any annoying comments or actions....

What did you say?

There is so much focus on how others treat us and how what they are doing or saying makes us feel.

But actually, nobody can make us feel anything!

Focusing on them is an excellent way to take the attention away from how we treat ourselves.

So what are you saying to yourself?

Have you ever taken a moment to pay attention to the things you are thinking or saying about yourself?

Maybe you can take a moment right now and remember some of the thoughts going through your head for the past hour. Were any of them kind or uplifting in any way?

Have you thought even one nice thing about yourself the entire day?

If not, perhaps it is time to change all that.

To me, saying and thinking bad things about ourselves is a way of cursing.

When you realize how many thoughts you have each day and how many of those thoughts are negative and creating exactly what you don’t want, well that is a form of cursing yourself.

I seriously doubt most of us would let anyone talk to us the way we can...
