Distractions All Around… What To Do?

Do you get distracted easily?

I used to be easily distracted and I would chronically multitask.

There’s nothing wrong with that. I just began to notice that there was never a shortage of someone or something ready to take my attention away from things that truly mattered to me.

I wasted years of my life doing what others wanted and adding great value and support to their world. I’m not blaming them, I simply didn’t know.

I did often feel drained, lost and like my purpose was to be others' side-kick in making their life more enjoyable and successful.

It was tricky because I truly enjoyed helping people and didn’t want to stop altogether.

But, somehow my needs and goals got pushed to the side and my investment of  energy, kindness and time were very out of balance.

Even things that are important to you need to be balanced. And if you don’t value your time nobody else will.

From constant phone notifications, errands to run, traffic, and making time to eat.

It can all get overwhelming really quickly.

There are things you need to do and things that gobble up your time with no real value being added to your life.

It’s important that you get clear on what your values are and how to identify time drains. Or you’ll be like a squirrel bouncing here and there and possibly getting nowhere fast!

The world encourages short attention spans and the reasons for each person being easily distracted are too numerous to count.

Without getting into the how or why of it. I’m going to offer some things that have helped me be less distracted and maybe these insights can help you too.

Prioritize yourself first: Make time each day for your essential needs. Sleep, food, rest. Don’t get into the habit of fitting these things in around other people's wants. Otherwise, you’ll end up feeling resentful, tired and cranky.

Stick to a schedule: Once you know what you require to get enough food, sleep and exercise. You can prioritize work. Personal goals, and socializing. If you find yourself resisting a schedule, investigate the reasons why and make adjustments.

Say No more often: Stop saying yes to every invite, phone call and phone distractions. A big time drain and distractor is last minute things. Cancellations, change of plans, bookings. These are fine sometimes, but be honest if they are happening regularly. If so, you may need better boundaries and value your time more.

Reward yourself with fun: I’m a pretty motivated disciplined person, but I can sometimes feel blah about certain tasks. When I know I need to do something I’m not thrilled about I will get excited by giving myself permission to do something I really love as soon as the task is done.

There ya have it!

Those are some of the ideas I’ve used over the years to stay focused and more balanced in my life.

I hope you find some or all of them helpful in your own life.
